The Legend of Piraeus
The Legend of Piraeus
THE LEGEND OF PIRAEUS
“My Piraeus, my Piraeus, with your Saronic Gulf, you take pride in your Olympiacos”, says the famous folk song. But the truth is that Olympiacos is not just the pride of Greece’s largest port; it is the pride of the entire nation. From the moment of its founding in March 1925, Olympiacos was much more than just a sports club. It gave the economically disadvantaged people a reason to walk the streets with their heads held high—proudly. It was not just their team; it was a way of life. A club that was born from the people, grew with them, and ultimately belongs to them. Olympiacos is not just another team—it is a way of life, an example for fighters in everyday life. It never surrenders. It overcomes obstacles and triumphs. It is a Legend. Born in Piraeus, the second-largest port in the Mediterranean, Olympiacos has been immortalized in the song "No matter how much I search, I can’t find another port like this." It carries the Olympiacos ideals across the world. It inspires Greeks. It is something magical in the mind.
Its emblem is the Laurel-Crowned Youth, the Olympic victor. Its colors—the passionate red and the pure white—symbolize its essence. With countless titles across all sports, Olympiacos has become a banner of pride. The name "Legend" was not given by chance to the club of Piraeus, which besides from 47 Championship titles and 28 Greek Cup titles in football, also dominates in every sport in Greece. It has won European titles in multiple disciplines, while in football, it is among Europe's elite, with years of presence in the Champions League—and culminating in winning the UEFA Europa Conference League in the 2023-2024 season! World-class football stars have played for Olympiacos. Among them are Christian Karembeu (now Strategic Advisor and Ambassador), Olof Mellberg, Yaya Touré, Rivaldo, Predrag Đorđević, Kevin Mirallas, Ariel Ibagaza, Giovanni, Darko Kovačević (now sporting director), Albert Riera, Luciano Galletti, Éric Abidal, Ibrahim Afellay, Javier Saviola, Alejandro Domínguez, Esteban Cambiasso, Marko Marin, Óscar Cardozo, Mathieu Valbuena, Marcelo, James Rodríguez, Willian, and many more.
OLYMPIACOS S.F.P.
Over the years, while football and basketball have become professional sports, Olympiacos S.F.P. continues to foster sportsmanship and compete at the highest level in the following disciplines: men’s and women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s water polo, women’s basketball, men’s handball, track and field, swimming, table tennis, boxing, sailing, rowing, canoe-kayak, taekwondo, kickboxing, fencing, beach volleyball, and tennis.
At the same time, the organisation maintains Academies where thousands of children have the opportunity to practice, love, and learn the secrets of their sport from highly trained and scientifically qualified coaches.
Today, Olympiacos is the most popular team in Greece—a legendary club with nearly 100 years of history. A united, indivisible club. A family.
A key testament to Olympiacos' dominance is its 14 European titles in major team sports—four before 2005 and ten since 2014! The women’s water polo team alone has won seven European trophies—three European Championships, one LEN Trophy, and three Super Cups! In fact, two of those Champions League titles were won back-to-back in 2021 and 2022. In 2018, the women’s volleyball team won the Challenge Cup, while in the same year, the men’s water polo team lifted the European Championship. In 2023, the men’s volleyball team also claimed the Challenge Cup. Olympiacos’ men’s volleyball team had previously won the CEV Cup in 1996 and 2005, while in 2002, the men’s water polo team was crowned European Champion and secured the Super Cup.
In individual sports, Olympiacos has also won two European titles, in wrestling and table tennis. For years, Olympiacos Amateur Club has been dominant in every competition it participates in. It is not just an active club—it is a leader and a champion in all sports. Olympiacos has surpassed 320 titles in major Olympic team sports, making it the top multi-sport club in Europe! A perfect example of its impact is seen at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games—out of the 101 Greek athletes representing the country, 23 came from Olympiacos’ teams. Among them, Emmanouil Karalis and Apostolos Christou reached the podium: Karalis won the bronze medal in the pole vault final, and Christou took home the silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke. Olympiacos’ men’s basketball team has also been crowned European Champion three times—1997, 2012, and 2013—while in 2013, they also won the Intercontinental Cup. Millions of passionate Olympiacos fans share a deep, unwavering love for the club's iconic red-and-white striped jersey. They expect the athletes to embody the passion, pride, and determination that the name Olympiacos has represented since its very first breath. The club that became a LEGEND!
THE LEGEND ON EUROPE’S THRONE – THE ULTIMATE TRIUMPH
During the 2023-24 season, Olympiacos, under the leadership of Evangelos Marinakis, achieved European glory at both the first team and Academy levels. The "Red-and-Whites" made history by securing the first-ever UEFA trophy won by a Greek team, lifting two European titles! First, the Olympiacos U19 team triumphed in the UEFA Youth League, defeating AC Milan 3-0 in the final. Then, the first team followed up with an unforgettable 1-0 victory over Fiorentina in Nea Filadelfeia, clinching the UEFA Europa Conference League. This incredible feat marked a monumental moment for Greek sports history! The celebrations in Athens and Piraeus—culminating at the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus—were unparalleled. The entire city stayed awake, and all of Greece rejoiced!
"The crazy dream is now a reality. For our Olympiacos, for our Piraeus, for our Greece. I want our countless fans, our players, our great coach, and everyone who gave us the strength to keep dreaming and turning those dreams into reality to enjoy this night. Long live Olympiacos, long live Piraeus, long live Greece!"
—Evangelos Marinakis, Olympiacos President
With this achievement, Olympiacos became the first club in European football history to win two UEFA competitions in a single season—an unprecedented accomplishment that no other club has ever achieved!
SOCIAL AND CHARITY ACTION
Under the presidency of Evangelos Marinakis, Olympiacos has made a significant impact both in Greece and internationally through its charitable and social initiatives, transforming and improving the lives of countless people. The club has actively committed to social development and well-being, responding immediately to support those in need, especially victims of natural disasters in recent years. Furthermore, Olympiacos has consistently provided moral and financial support to major organizations dedicated to caring for children and their families as they bravely fight cancer and other serious illnesses.
The Olympiacos Academy and its network of football schools across Greece and abroad play an active role in these philanthropic efforts, inspiring younger generations to understand the importance of helping others and leading by example. Additionally, the club continuously enhances its facilities, introducing new services and amenities to ensure that individuals with disabilities can fully experience the magic of football. Olympiacos is truly a "Red-and-White" family—one that cares for and supports its people.
GEORGIOS KARAISKAKIS STADIUM
The iconic stadium was originally built in 1895 as a Velodrome for the first modern Olympic Games in Athens (1896). It was used as a football ground for the first time in the 1920s. In 1960, it was rebuilt and renamed in honor of General and National Hero Georgios Karaiskakis (1782-1827), who was killed near the stadium’s location during the Greek War of Independence (1821). The stadium became synonymous with Olympiacos, hosting legendary moments of glory and triumph. In 2003, it was demolished and replaced with a state-of-the-art football-specific stadium with a capacity of 33,449 seats, fully covered, making it one of the most modern venues in Europe. In 2004, it served as a key football venue for the Athens Olympic Games. In August 2023, the Faliro-located stadium hosted the UEFA Super Cup final between Manchester City and Sevilla, receiving high praise from UEFA for an impeccable organization. It was also the stage for the second leg of the UEFA Europa Conference League semi-final against Aston Villa, in an electrifying atmosphere, where Olympiacos secured their place in the final—a historic night for the club. Additionally, the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium provides fans with the opportunity to combine matchday excitement with a visit to the Olympiacos Museum and the official team store, the Red Store, located within the stadium premises.
